Career paths for ChemE + Bio?

I'm a ChemE student heading into my senior year, and as much as I love the core ChemE curriculum, I'm finding myself increasingly drawn to the biological side of things. I've always been fascinated by biology, and seeing how it integrates with engineering principles has really sparked my interest.

I joined this forum hoping to hear rom any senior engineers or researchers out there who have managed to bridge these two disciplines. Specifically, I'm looking for insights into career paths, particularly in research, where biology and chemical engineering truly intersect. What kind of roles exist? What does the day-to-day look like? Are there specific industries or research areas that are particularly strong for this kind of interdisciplinary work? Any first-hand accounts of integrating biological principles into a chemical engineering career would be incredibly helpful.
 
I started my journey in ChemE too, but eventually found my passion in bioprocessing, and now I'm diving deep into biomanufacturing. If you're into research, you should really check out biotech, synthetic biology, or metabolic engineering, they're all super exciting fields

You're not alone, I know many ChemEs getting pulled towards bio-related fields! For research, look squarely at biopharmaceutical companies, biotech startups, and even some advanced materials or food science R&D. Roles often involve process development for biologics (think vaccines, therapeutic proteins), designing bioreactors, developing drug delivery systems, or working on tissue engineering and regenerative medicine. To have a better idea (and if you're not yet tired of school), I suggest exploring graduate programs or internships that are specifically interdisciplinary! These are great ways to truly bridge the gap and see what the day-to-day looks like in these combined fields.
 
@ch3m3ist_ here just gave you a great rundown. I'd also add environmental biotech to the list since ChemE skills translate well to wastewater treatment and biofuel process development.
